Abelardo's Mexican Food, nestled at 533 Lincoln Way in Ames, Iowa, has quickly become a local favorite, and for good reason. The generous portions and affordable prices are often highlighted, making every visit a satisfying experience. Jami Tharp praises the quick service, with online ordering typically ready in just 10-15 minutes.
Food quality consistently impresses, with items like the chicken fajitas and carnitas drawing compliments. The delightful cinnamon and sugar crisps serve as a sweet finish to any meal, while their avocado salsa is noted for elevating tacos and nachos. Halsey Bailey emphasizes the warm, welcoming atmosphere molded by friendly staff, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Though some patrons mention slight delays during peak hours, the freshly prepared dishes make it well worth the wait. With a combination of great food, excellent customer service, and an inviting vibe, Abelardo's has solidified its spot as a must-try Mexican eatery in Ames.

They have the best breakfast burritos and their service is excellent. You can place your order online and it is typically ready within 10-15 mins. Their cinnamon and sugar crisps are so good and just perfect for that sweet tooth!

My first experience with Abelardo's is a "can't wait to come back" winner! The picture menu in the drive through was very helpful and my food looked just like the picture. The tortillas were grilled and strong enough to hold the generous and delicious chicken fajita, which was spicy enough to get my attention but not overwhelming. Most refried beans are a mere afterthought, but not these. Mui bueno!!

So glad that Abelardo's opened a chain in Ames (located at where the Long John Silver's used to be). I can finally get my fix of chorizo and egg burrito for breakfast without having to go all the way down to Des Moines. I have to admit though, the West Des Moines chain still have the best breakfast tacos, but who has the time to drive all the way to WDM on a Saturday morning... Having grown up in Southern California, I can attest to the quality of Abelardo's carne asada fries (it's called "super fries" on the menu). It tastes just like home, except I recommend subbing in the adobada for meat. Given that we're in Iowa, Abelardo's adobada (made from carne/pork) is to die for, and it goes well with anything on their menu (tacos, burritos, super fries/nachos). The other thing that I recommend is their avocado salsa. It's like guacamole, except 10 times better (and spicy too!). The service is friendly, the drive-thru intercom works, and the decor... well, it's typical Mexican fast food/grease grill. Beware of the slow wait time after ordering, they cook everything fresh after ordering.

The food is tasty and portions are large. One of the best Mexican restaurants in Ames. Prices are great. Breakfast burritos are lit. Beef and bean and chicken burritos are excellent. I easily make 2 meals out of this and I am a big boy.

empanadas are my favorite from Abelardo's, but that hot sauce is something nobody else has either! If you like spicy, ask for that hot sauce!
